You've just been called to an unscheduled 8:30 am coffee meeting and when you show up HR is at the table. If you've been in the Advertising industry for any length of time, you've likely experienced this scenario before and know what’s coming next. Layoffs have become a recurring theme in the first few months of 2024, and there's a good chance they will happen again. But fear not, you're not alone in this.
So, what's the next step?
First things first – take a couple of days to process everything. Take a deep breath and allow yourself to truly relax. This might be the first real opportunity you've had to unwind in a while, so don't be too hard on yourself. A few days off won't make or break your job search. Once you've had a chance to decompress, start thinking about what comes next. What did you enjoy most about your previous role and what would you like to do more of? Consider what you'll miss and what you won't miss, as well as any areas you've always wanted to explore.
Network, Network, Network:
Let people know you are looking for a new opportunity (there is no shame in layoffs so don’t hide that you are available). Update your LinkedIn profile and make a post. You might be surprised by the extent of your personal network. Reach out, reconnect, and tap into the supportive community around you.
Next, it's time to spruce up your CV and portfolio:
Remember, portfolios aren't just for creatives! Whether you're a strategist or an account person, showcasing your work and achievements can make a significant impact. Just be sure to credit the rest of the team appropriately. Check this out for some great tips to update your resume.
And don't forget to reach out to a Recruiter (or a few):
In Canada, companies hire external recruiters like the Junction Collective to track down candidates for their job openings. We don’t “rep” candidates to find them a job or to handle their job search. This is often misunderstood, and It's an important differentiation. Recruiters are more like matchmakers connecting candidates with companies. Sometimes, recruiters even introduce candidates to other recruiters for their searches! So be sure to reach out and connect so that we know what you are looking for. While we might not have an immediate search that is a fit for you, we will keep you in mind for future roles (that is not just a line we all use).
At Junction Collective, we understand the uncertainties you're dealing with and we’re here to help you out along the journey. We firmly believe that every ending marks a fresh start. Take this chance to consider your career goals, reconnect with your contacts, and spruce up your professional profile.
