What a year! We wanted to take a moment and reflect on a big year for all of us - diving into entrepreneurship and launching a business was the least of it. Here's some of the best things we’ve done this year, what we’re grateful for, and what we hope to accomplish in 2021.

Launching a recruiting business, or any business, at the start of a pandemic isn’t for the faint of heart. In our line of work, we have a big picture of the entire job search industry. Here are some reflections from a pretty unusual year:
The recruiting business is about humans first. When hiring came to an abrupt halt I opened my Fridays to have conversations with as many job seekers as possible. I quickly created online job search tools and courses to help those in need.
The advertising/marketing community was quick to pitch in, especially the community on the Toronto Ad Job Group. Their generosity warmed my heart.
Working ON your business and IN your business require very different skills. There is something new to learn every day.
My partners are all very different and bring their unique skills and personality to the collective. I’m thankful to them for taking this crazy leap of faith with me.
I’m appreciative of the many people who have supported our new journey. In 10 short months, we have partnered with some pretty incredible clients. I am grateful for each and every one of them.

I think we would all agree 2020 has been a year like no other! I will personally look back on this year and be grateful for:
Taking the biggest risk in my professional career and launching a recruitment business with my three amazing partners who encouraged me, supported me and kept me strong and motivated. Doing this during a world-wide pandemic and one of the largest economic crises in history was certainly never the plan... but to quote one of my partners “Why not! If not now, when?”
Witnessing the Toronto Advertising/ Marketing community pull together. The ongoing outpouring of genuine support and encouragement for each other reminded me why I love doing what I do, and the incredible people I get to connect with.
The luxury of being able to walk my daughter to and from school each day, and the ability to play a much more active role in my childrens’ lives.
The true magic and power of four determined women and the support we have received from so many others.
Watching the world come together like never before in the collective struggle against the pandemic.

Being a founding member of Junction Collective was one the best things I could have done. I realized that nurturing relationships is far more important than closing deals. Helping clients and caring for people trying to find work has become my everything. Looking back and reflecting, here are some specific things I learned in 2020:
Variety is the spice of life. You need partners with different skills, ideas and perspectives. If we were all the same, it would be boring. Besides, I’d be lost without them!
When it comes to solving problems – never do it over text; always just pick up the phone. Way easier.
Being a people person, I’m still learning to master Zoom video calls. What I do know, ALWAYS wear lipstick!
Celebrate every win – it helps you build momentum.
You have to believe in yourself, be flexible, adaptable and have grit.

Is there a right time to launch a business? Not as far as I can tell. And if not this year, then when? Starting a business at the beginning of a global pandemic will be a great topic for my TED Talk. You heard it here first.
No two days are the same. Every day we are doing something different and I love every minute of it.
Being surrounded by a smart and supportive team of women is the real gift here. I could not be doing this without them!
This year has taught me how strong we all are together, the power of the collective, and that I am not working at this alone.
So grateful for the support of so many. For taking the time to offer guidance and advice and for putting your trust in us.
Here’s to a successful and most importantly healthy 2021 for all of us! We can’t wait to see what the next chapter looks like!
