Improve Your Interview Performance with These Tips

This post was originally written by Joanne Acri on LinkedIn

One of my clients recently remarked “It’s shocking how poorly people are performing in interviews these days.”

When we discussed what was going on with the candidates she was meeting, I thought it might be worth rounding up some of my best interview advice again for anyone preparing to meet a recruiter or hiring manager.

  1. Do your research: Go beyond the company's mission and values, explore recent news, projects, or industry trends. Know who you are meeting with and bonus points for making a connection back to something they had done.

  2. Practice your answers: Don't just memorize them. Articulate your experiences in a way that highlights your skills and aligns with the job that you’re interviewing for. I suggest using the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to structure your responses. Write these answers down before hand and practice them out loud.

  3. Show enthusiasm: Be genuinely excited about the opportunity and focus on how your skills and experience can contribute to the company's success.

  4. Tailor your answers to the specific role: Don’t be general. Provide details where you can and connect your experiences to the specific requirements of the job.

  5. Ask insightful questions: If you’ve done your research, this is a piece of cake as you’ll already have questions. Please avoid generic questions like "What's a typical day like?"

Easy, right? You got this.
